After almost 6 years of loving the Legacy River Khwai Resort, we are on the move to a place with much more space and jungle for our elephants!
We are so excited to give our elephants the opportunity to live out their retirement years in an environment that is far from the stress and bustle of their previous lives.
Most elephant sanctuaries in Thailand provide homes for elephants who became unemployed when logging was banned in 1989, since our elephants are well into their retirement years it’s easy to assume that they have never know wild living so our new land in the Sai Yok area will be an exciting but a big transition for our elephants!
We have someone observing their behaviour before, during and after their move, we want to know that everything will happen smoothly and with as little stress on our elephants as possible.
The logistics of moving an elephant in Thailand is worth mentioning here. I mean, how do you move three grandma elephants each weighing 2000kilos?
You need a permit and a specialized elephant moving truck, you need Mahouts to stay with the elephant while they are being transported. It’s not an unusual sight in Thailand to see an elephant riding in the back of a truck! And of course you need a vet on hand to monitor the comfort and safety of the elephants.
And for Kham Paeng we will probably be providing extra watermelon to seal the deal.
We will be working with some resorts in the Sai Yok area, our meeting place is Home Phutoey Resort which is easily reached as a day trip from Kanchanaburi or Bangkok, for more details on our new location, click here.
